Katana "Bitchu Kunitomo"

Blade length 71.2cm, thickness at the base 8mm, width 3.3cm

This is a robust katana blade made by Kunitomo in Bitchu province. The age is around 16th century. It is the end of Koto period. So this is a good example of Bitchu blade in 16th century.

Steel has a small wood grain layer pattern. And it is visible. Some spots of clear colored steel come up in some part what is so-called Sumi-hada or Sumi-gane. People say it shows the remains of Aoe style sword making.

Hamon is made of large particles. It is bright enough. Its pattern is active like Gunome or so.

Polishing is beautiful done by a student of living national treasure.

Tang
Signature "Bitchu-ju Kunitomo"

The tang is original, but the blade is a little shortened. In other words, the Machi is moved some 5cm upward.

Habaki is gold foiled.
